President John Dramani Mahama says the Sentuo Airport Garden City Project will help address Accra’s shortage of hotel and conference facilities and strengthen the capital’s capacity to host major international events.
He said the project could position Accra to compete for high-profile gatherings, including conferences organised by the United Nations.
President Mahama made the remarks on Tuesday during the ceremonial sod-cutting ceremony for the Sentuo Airport Garden City Project.
According to him, Accra has previously lost opportunities to host major international conferences due to inadequate accommodation and conference facilities for large numbers of international participants.
He said the completion of the project would provide the city with the infrastructure needed to host such events.
President Mahama recalled instances where Accra was overlooked in favour of other cities because of the infrastructure gap, citing Dakar in Senegal as one of the beneficiaries of an international event that could have been held in Ghana.
He stressed the need for increased investment in hospitality and conference infrastructure to enable Accra to take advantage of opportunities to host major global events.
The President said the Sentuo project forms part of broader development around the airport enclave, with public and private investments expected to transform the area into a major commercial and business destination.
He noted that Accra continues to attract increasing numbers of business travellers, tourists and participants in international events, making the expansion of accommodation and conference facilities necessary.
President Mahama also urged stakeholders to develop strategies to encourage tourists and business travellers to extend their stay and visit other parts of the country.
He said this would help spread the economic benefits of tourism to transport operators, hotels, restaurants, artisans, farmers, workers and communities outside Accra.
The Sentuo Airport Garden City Project is expected to include hospitality, residential, healthcare, commercial and leisure facilities, including a 600-room hotel and a conference facility with capacity for approximately 2,500 people.
President Mahama said the project would provide critical infrastructure for Ghana’s tourism and hospitality industry while creating opportunities for businesses and workers.
