Transport Fares Could Rise by 25–30% – GPRTU
The GPRTU says transport fares could increase by 25–30% if the expected rise in fuel prices takes effect.

The Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) has signalled a possible 25–30% increase in transport fares following an expected rise in fuel prices.
The Union’s Deputy Public Relations Officer, Samuel Amoah, said negotiations are ongoing, with a decision on new fares expected by the end of the week.
Fuel prices are expected to increase from Wednesday, September 16, with petrol projected to exceed GH¢16 per litre and diesel potentially going above GH¢19 per litre.
Speaking in an interview on Tuesday, September 15, Mr Amoah said the expected fuel price increase could make a review of transport fares necessary.
He said discussions are already underway, including negotiations on a proposed 30% adjustment currently before the Transport Ministry.
According to him, although the final percentage has not been determined, any increase could range between 25% and 30%.
“Let’s see, if even it will come down, it won’t come down below maybe 25%,” he said.
Mr Amoah, however, clarified that any new fares would not take effect immediately after an agreement is reached.
He explained that transport operators usually give commuters a grace period to prepare before implementing new fares.
He urged passengers to prepare for a possible increase as negotiations continue.
