President John Dramani Mahama has raised concerns over poor officiating in Ghana’s domestic leagues, warning that questionable refereeing is undermining the growth, competitiveness and appeal of Ghanaian football.
The President made the remarks on Tuesday, September 8, 2026, when Nations FC and Medeama SC paid a courtesy call on him at the Jubilee House following their qualification for CAF inter-club competitions.
According to President Mahama, the standard of refereeing remains one of the major challenges affecting the development of football in the country.
“Unfortunately, refereeing is one of the things destroying our football,” he said.
He called on the Ghana Football Association (GFA) and the Ghana Referees Association to work together to improve officiating standards and restore confidence among football supporters.
President Mahama noted that perceptions of predetermined match results have contributed to declining stadium attendance, with some fans losing faith in the fairness of domestic league games.
He stressed the need for every match to be fairly officiated so that teams win on merit.
The President believes improved officiating will make Ghana’s domestic leagues more competitive, attract supporters back to the stadiums and ultimately help restore confidence in Ghanaian football.
