Police Seize 321 Boxes of Cigarettes, 100 Containers of Suspected Cyanide
Two suspects are in custody after an intelligence-led operation intercepted a vehicle carrying suspected contraband and chemicals.

The Bono East Regional Police Command has arrested two persons after intercepting a vehicle allegedly transporting contraband at Jema.
The vehicle, a Kia Rhino with registration number UE 819-26, was intercepted on Tuesday, September 1, 2026, during an intelligence-led operation conducted jointly by the Bono East Regional Police Intelligence Directorate and the Police Intelligence Directorate Headquarters in Accra.
The driver, identified as Fusini Danaa, was arrested at about 4:00 p.m. while travelling from Nalerigu to Kumasi.
Cigarettes and Suspected Cyanide Seized
A search of the vehicle, which was reportedly loaded with maize, uncovered 321 boxes of foreign cigarettes, including Royals, Oris and Gold Seal brands.
Police also seized 23 bags of soya beans, 39 bags of groundnut husks, 21 bags of millet, and 100 containers of suspected sodium cyanide.
Preliminary investigations indicate that the consignment was handed over to the driver at Bentri, near Nalerigu, for delivery to a customer in Kumasi.
The driver and his mate are currently in police custody assisting with investigations.
Samples Taken for Analysis
The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the Ghana Standards Authority (GSA) have taken samples of the suspected sodium cyanide for laboratory analysis.
The authorities are particularly concerned about the reported transportation of the suspected chemical alongside food products.
Police said the vehicle and seized items have been secured as investigations continue to identify and arrest other persons who may be connected to the consignment.
