3 Killed, 15 Injured as Violent Clashes Rock New Winneba

Three people have been confirmed dead and about 15 others injured following violent clashes in New Winneba in Ghana’s Central Region.

The incident occurred on Tuesday, September 1, 2026, after a group of about 300 people allegedly armed with guns, stones, cutlasses and sticks stormed the New Winneba Township around 10:40 a.m.

According to the Ghana Police Service, the group reportedly came from Gomoa Oguakrom, Gomoa Yenkuadze and Gomoa Pomadze and attacked residents while vandalising shops, stores and other properties.

Among those injured is a police officer. The victims have been taken to the Trauma and Specialist Hospital in Winneba for treatment.

Police personnel from the Winneba Divisional Headquarters and Agona Swedru District Patrols were deployed to contain the violence and restore calm.

The Inspector-General of Police, Christian Tetteh Yohuno, has also ordered additional personnel from the National Police Headquarters, including two armoured vehicles, to reinforce security operations.

The Police Service says the situation is currently under control, with security personnel remaining on the ground to prevent further disturbances. Investigations are ongoing.
