Incumbent New Patriotic Party (NPP) General Secretary Justin Kodua Frimpong (JFK) has emerged as the leading candidate in the race for the party’s next General Secretary, according to an online poll conducted by the Institute of Political Research (IPR).
The survey sought to gauge respondents’ preferred candidate for the influential position and placed JFK significantly ahead of the other contenders.
According to the poll, the incumbent General Secretary recorded strong support among participants, creating a wide margin between himself and his closest competitors and positioning him as the early frontrunner.
The findings suggest that JFK continues to enjoy considerable backing within the party, following his tenure as General Secretary and his engagement with structures at the polling station, constituency and regional levels.
Party insiders have attributed his appeal to his emphasis on grassroots empowerment, party unity and the reorganisation of the NPP following the 2024 general elections.
JFK was first elected General Secretary in 2022 and has since been associated with internal reforms and the coordination of various party activities.
However, the IPR results should be viewed in context, as the survey was conducted online and may not necessarily represent the eventual choices of delegates who will vote in the national executive elections.
Nevertheless, the poll indicates that JFK has built significant early momentum as the contest for the General Secretary position intensifies.
Background to the NPP National Elections
The NPP’s National Officers Elections Committee (NOEC) has announced that 47 of the 50 individuals who picked nomination forms have successfully filed their forms for the 2026 National Officers Elections.
In a statement issued on August 22, the committee said the 50 nomination forms were purchased across the nine national officer positions being contested.
The vetting of aspirants is scheduled to take place from August 31 to September 3, 2026, with the outcome expected to be published on September 5.
An appeals process will follow from September 6 to 7, while the National Council and National Executive Committee are expected to meet on September 10.
The notice of poll is scheduled to be issued on September 14, ahead of the national elections on October 3, 2026.
