The Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Odeneho Kwaku Appiah, popularly known as COKA, has directed constituency chairmen across the region to curb premature campaigns against sitting Members of Parliament (MPs).

Addressing constituency executives, COKA expressed concern over party members who are already presenting themselves as “incoming MPs” ahead of the official opening of nominations.

He warned that such activities could create indiscipline, undermine sitting MPs and generate unnecessary tension within the party.

“As constituency chairmen, I charge you to halt the activities of individuals campaigning before the official time, ensuring that nothing is done behind the backs of incumbent MPs to make them feel insecure.”

According to COKA, sitting MPs require a stable environment to concentrate on their legislative responsibilities and other demanding assignments.

“Our MPs need peace of mind to focus on their legislative mandates and difficult assignments.”

Focus on 2028

COKA said the NPP’s immediate priority should be to regroup, rebuild its structures and position the party to regain political power in the 2028 general elections.

Reflecting on the party’s performance in the 2024 elections, he noted that the NPP lost more than two million votes, with the decline recorded across polling stations, electoral areas, constituencies and regions.

He therefore urged party executives to focus on identifying where the party lost support and reconnecting with those voters instead of engaging in internal rivalries.

“Our core mandate is to trace where we lost those votes and re-engage those electors, rather than engaging in destructive internal rivalries.”

He called on constituency executives to reach out to disgruntled party supporters and voters who did not participate in the 2024 elections ahead of the next electoral cycle.

Grassroots Mobilisation

COKA also thanked constituency chairmen for their support during the recently concluded regional executive elections and assured them of the necessary logistics and resources to perform their duties effectively.

He urged the executives to remain active in their constituencies and prioritise continuous grassroots mobilisation.

“You were elected by your constituents to lead and make the party attractive to the electorate.”

He further encouraged them to remain visible within their constituencies and work towards increasing the party’s support base ahead of the 2028 general elections.

“Stay in your constituencies, remain visible, and dedicate your efforts to shoring up the NPP’s numbers for the upcoming general elections.”
