A Ghanaian returnee from South Africa has died shortly after arriving at the Accra International Airport as part of the government’s ongoing evacuation exercise.
The deceased was among 50 Ghanaians who arrived in the country aboard an Air Tanzania flight at about 5:50 p.m. on Friday, August 14, 2026.
According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the passenger fell ill shortly before the aircraft landed in Accra and was subsequently taken to the Emergency Medical Reception at the airport for treatment.
The Ministry said the returnee’s condition deteriorated approximately 30 minutes before the flight touched down.
A medical emergency team that had been placed on standby at the airport attended to the passenger upon arrival and made efforts to save his life.
However, the passenger was pronounced dead by doctors at about 6:55 p.m.
In a statement, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs expressed its condolences to the deceased’s family and said it was taking the necessary steps to formally inform them of the death.
The Ministry has also arranged for the body to be deposited at the Police Hospital, where an autopsy is expected to be conducted.
It said further updates would be provided after formal engagement with the bereaved family.
The deceased was among Ghanaians evacuated from South Africa under the government’s ongoing efforts to assist citizens affected by the recent unrest in the country.
