Jorge Messi, the father of Argentina and Inter Miami star Lionel Messi, has died at the age of 68.
Jorge reportedly passed away at a hospital in Rosario, Argentina, close to the family home, at about 10 p.m. local time on Friday, August 7, 2026.

His death was first reported by Argentine media and later confirmed by Newell’s Old Boys, the club where Lionel Messi began his football journey.
In a statement, the club described Jorge as a devoted supporter and praised his important role in his son’s development from his early years at the club’s Malvinas academy to becoming one of the world’s most celebrated footballers.
Newell’s Old Boys said Jorge’s constant support and guidance were instrumental throughout Messi’s career and extended condolences to Lionel, his mother, Celia Cuccittini, his siblings, Rodrigo, Matías and María Sol, and the wider family.
The cause of death has not been disclosed.
Jorge Messi was a major figure behind his son’s career and served as his agent and business manager, overseeing aspects of Lionel Messi’s professional and commercial affairs.
Health concerns
Concerns about Jorge’s health emerged earlier this year after reports that he suffered a medical episode at his home in January and was subsequently admitted to hospital.
Lionel Messi had previously hinted at a difficult period within his family following Argentina’s World Cup match against Algeria. After scoring a hat-trick, Messi became emotional when asked about his feelings and said the situation was unrelated to football.
Argentine journalist Eduardo Feinmann later reported that Messi’s father had been dealing with health problems for several months.
The South American football governing body, CONMEBOL, also expressed its condolences following Jorge Messi’s death.
“CONMEBOL deeply regrets the passing of Jorge Messi, father of Argentine footballer Lionel Messi,” the organisation said, extending its sympathy to Messi, his family, friends and loved ones.
