Southampton head coach Tonda Eckert has been formally charged with misconduct by the Football Association (FA) for his central role in the club’s high-profile “Spygate” scandal.
The FA’s decision follows an extensive investigation into internal culpability after Saints were dramatically expelled from the Championship play-offs in May, having admitted to spying on three opposition clubs throughout the campaign.
According to a statement released by football’s governing body, Eckert has been charged with three separate breaches of FA Rule E3.1 regarding improper conduct between December 2025 and May 2026.
An independent disciplinary commission previously concluded that the illicit espionage operations were directly authorized by Eckert, describing the scheme as a “contrived and determined plan from the top down.”
The fallout from the scandal severely disrupted the post-season promotion race. Although Southampton initially defeated Middlesbrough over two legs in the play-off semi-finals, their subsequent disqualification allowed Middlesbrough to take their place in the final, where they ultimately lost to Hull City.
Eckert, who was appointed Saints boss on a permanent basis in December, now faces potential touchline bans or further disciplinary sanctions from the FA as proceedings continue.
