Two men have been arrested after police intercepted substances suspected to be narcotic drugs concealed in fertilizer sacks at the Asawase Market in Kumasi.
The suspects have been identified as 37-year-old Osman Bassein and 38-year-old Mohammed Abdul-Razak.
They were arrested on July 21, 2026, during an intelligence-led operation conducted by the Manhyia District Police Command.
According to the Ashanti Regional Police Command, officers acted on credible intelligence that suspected narcotic drugs were being transported in fertilizer sacks.
A team led by the District Commander, with support from the Manhyia Divisional Criminal Investigations Department (CID) and the Zongo Police Station, carried out the operation.
Police said a search conducted in the presence of independent witnesses led to the retrieval of 13 fertilizer sacks containing second-hand clothing, which was allegedly used to conceal 100 compressed parcels of dried leaves suspected to be narcotic drugs.
The exhibits were photographed at the scene and secured for forensic examination.
The suspects remain in police custody assisting with investigations and will be processed in accordance with the law pending the outcome of the investigations.
The Ashanti Regional Police Command has commended members of the public for providing timely information that led to the operation.
The Command has also urged residents to continue reporting suspicious activities through the police emergency numbers 191, 112, or the MTN toll-free line 18555.
