At least 20 people have been killed and about 70 others injured after an explosion targeted a train carrying military personnel in Pakistan.

The incident occurred on Sunday morning as the train passed through Chaman Phatak station in Quetta, the capital of Pakistan’s western Balochistan region.

According to railway officials who spoke to BBC Urdu, the blast caused severe damage to the train, derailing the engine and three coaches, while two additional coaches overturned.

The train had mainly been transporting military personnel and their families returning home for the Eid celebrations.

Regional authorities blamed the attack on the Balochistan Liberation Army (BLA), describing it as a suicide bombing. The separatist group had earlier claimed responsibility for the attack.

Images from the scene showed heavily damaged and burnt train coaches, destroyed nearby vehicles, and structural damage to surrounding buildings.

A resident identified as Naseer Ahmed told the BBC that the explosion happened while the train was in motion and carrying passengers.

“The train was moving and there were passengers on board when the explosion occurred,” he said.

He added that the powerful blast shattered the windows of his home while his family was asleep on Sunday morning.
