Speaker of Parliament Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin has confirmed the arrest and detention of Ohene Kwame Frimpong in Amsterdam, assuring the House that Parliament is working with the government to ensure the MP receives fair treatment and due process.

Addressing Members of Parliament at the opening of the second meeting of the second session, the Speaker described the situation as unfortunate and said Parliament would continue to monitor developments closely.

According to him, the House had already been briefed on the matter and informed about steps being taken by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Ghana’s diplomatic mission in the Netherlands.

Speaker Bagbin stated that Parliament was collaborating with the government to ensure justice is served while also protecting the rights, dignity, and legal entitlements available to the MP under international law.

He further assured Parliament that updates would be provided as the case progresses.

The Speaker also extended the House’s sympathy to the family and constituents of the Asante Akyem North MP, acknowledging the impact of the development on them.

He urged members of the House to allow the relevant authorities and diplomatic officials handling the matter to continue their work without interference.
