A soldier has been killed following a tragic explosion during a military counter-terrorism training exercise in the Upper East Region.

The Chief of Army Staff, Major General Lawrence Kwaku Gbetanu, confirmed the death of a physical training instructor with the 6th Infantry Battalion during an operation in the Binduri Forest in the Binduri area.

The deceased, identified as 218079 Private Adotey, reportedly died after an explosion occurred during the exercise.

The incident happened during “Exercise Storm Shield,” a counter-terrorism training programme aimed at strengthening the preparedness and operational capability of security personnel against emerging security threats.

Major General Gbetanu, speaking at the closing ceremony of the exercise, expressed deep sorrow over the loss, describing the soldier as a dedicated and committed officer who died in the line of duty. He extended condolences to the bereaved family, colleagues, and the Ghana Armed Forces.

He further stressed the importance of the exercise in enhancing national security, especially in border communities vulnerable to violent extremism and terrorism-related threats.

The military has assured that investigations are ongoing into the incident, while reaffirming its commitment to safeguarding lives and maintaining peace across the country.
