Lionel Messi starred once again as Inter Miami CF secured their first victory at their new stadium with a 2-0 win over the Portland Timbers.

Messi opened the scoring with his 12th goal of the MLS season, finishing off a flowing team move with a powerful left-footed strike. The Argentine forward later turned provider, making a driving run into the penalty area before setting up German Berterame for Miami’s second goal shortly before half-time.

The 38-year-old former FC Barcelona star has been in outstanding form, registering five goals and six assists in his last four appearances.

The win marked a significant moment for Inter Miami, who had struggled to find success at the 26,700-capacity Nu Stadium since moving there in April after spending six years in Fort Lauderdale. Before defeating Portland, Miami had drawn three and lost one of their opening four home league matches at the new venue.

Under coach Guillermo Hoyos, Inter Miami now sit second in the MLS Eastern Conference standings with 28 points from 14 matches, just two points behind leaders Nashville SC.

Miami will play their final match before the World Cup break against the Philadelphia Union on Sunday, May 24.
