The Ghana Police Service has cautioned social media content creators against engaging in activities that amount to criminal behaviour under the guise of producing online content.

At a press briefing, Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCOP) Grace Ansah Akrofi said the service is increasingly concerned about the use of social media to spread threats, fear, and misinformation.

She revealed that at least one individual has been arrested after appearing in a masked video threatening to kill security personnel. According to her, the suspect later returned online claiming the video was intended as content creation, but police maintain that such actions cannot be excused when they threaten public safety.

DCOP Akrofi warned that anyone involved in conduct bordering on criminality would be tracked down and prosecuted, stressing that the police will “pursue and arrest” offenders to face the full force of the law.

She also referenced a previous incident in which individuals dressed as armed bandits circulated threatening videos online. In that case, arrests were also made.

Beyond direct threats, she noted an increase in online activities that spread panic and misinformation within communities.

The Police Service says it has intensified digital surveillance and online monitoring to prevent the misuse of social media for criminal purposes.

Citizens and content creators have been urged to act responsibly, with police warning that online behaviour crossing legal boundaries will attract prosecution.
