Lamine Yamal suffered an injury after scoring the decisive penalty in FC Barcelona’s narrow victory over RC Celta de Vigo, a result that extended their lead at the top of La Liga to nine points.

The 18-year-old won and converted the penalty in the 40th minute at the Camp Nou after dribbling into the box and being fouled by Yoel Lago. However, moments after scoring, Yamal signalled to the bench and went down clutching his left hamstring.

He was treated by medical staff and walked off the pitch in visible discomfort before being replaced by Roony Bardghji.

The injury has raised concerns for both Barcelona and Spain, with the World Cup approaching in less than two months.

Barcelona head coach Hansi Flick said after the match that the extent of the injury remains unclear.

“We have to wait and see what it is. He felt something after the goal and wouldn’t have left otherwise. Hopefully, it’s not serious,” Flick said.

The win moves the defending La Liga champions closer to retaining their title, with six matches remaining in the season. Barcelona will also be hoping Yamal is fit in time for the upcoming El Clásico against rivals Real Madrid.

Yamal has enjoyed a standout season, scoring 16 goals and providing 11 assists in La Liga, and was named Young Player of the Tournament at Euro 2024 after helping Spain win the competition.

Barcelona midfielder Pedri expressed hope for a quick recovery, saying the teenager should remain calm and that his youth will aid his return to fitness.
