Parliament Approves Accra–Kumasi Expressway Concession
Parliament approves six-lane dual carriageway to ease travel and improve safety on one of Ghana’s busiest routes.

- Parliament approves concession agreement for a six-lane Accra–Kumasi Expressway, with Accra–Kumasi Expressway Limited as the concessionaire
- The new expressway will serve as an alternative route, improving road safety, reducing travel time, and easing congestion on the existing highway
- Lawmakers urge continued maintenance of the current highway, ensuring lighting and repairs are completed alongside the new project
Parliament has officially approved the concession agreement for the Accra–Kumasi Expressway, appointing the Ministry of Roads and Highways as the Contracting Authority and Accra–Kumasi Expressway Limited as the concessionaire.
The approval comes as concerns grow over the deteriorating state of the existing Accra–Kumasi highway, plagued by potholes, uneven surfaces, and poor lighting.
Speaking in Parliament, Minister for Roads and Highways, Governs Agbodza, emphasized that the new expressway will serve as an alternative route, rather than replacing the current highway.
He highlighted that under ECOWAS and AU protocols, tolls can be charged to recover construction costs, provided commuters still have an alternative route available.
“There’s no road in Ghana more important than the Accra–Kumasi route. This is a project we’ll be proud of in five years,” Agbodza said.
The project entails building a six-lane dual carriageway designed to improve road safety, reduce travel time, and offer a more efficient commuting option.
During discussions on the Road and Transport Committee report, MP for Ofoase-Ayirebi, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, urged the government not to neglect the existing highway while construction of the expressway is underway.
He stressed the need to complete ongoing works on the current road, including proper lighting, and warned against potential resource conflicts between the two projects.
Government officials maintain that the new expressway will modernize one of Ghana’s key transport corridors, offering travelers a faster, safer, and more reliable journey between Accra and Kumasi.
