The Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi Boasiako—popularly known as Chairman Wontumi—has urged party executives in the Western Region to prioritise competence and strategic leadership over fluency in English when selecting the national chairman.

Addressing the executives, Wontumi, a three-time Ashanti Regional Chairman, emphasised that the party needs a national chairman who embodies the core principles, vision, and grassroots experience necessary to reclaim political power in the 2028 elections.

“This election is not for the books, but for those who are tried, tested, and rooted in grassroots work—someone popular and ready to deliver the victory the party needs,” he told the gathering. He insisted that he should be judged not on certificates but on competency and his ability to contribute to the party’s growth. “Don’t judge me based on my certificate but on my competency,” Wontumi said.

Highlighting the current challenges facing the party, including rising hopelessness and a loss of focus, he stressed the need for leadership that restores hope and direction. “I’m built for the battle ahead,” he declared, urging the Western Region executives to support his ambition.

Wontumi noted that his extensive service as a two-term Constituency Chairman and three-time Ashanti Regional Chairman has equipped him for the national role. He reaffirmed his commitment not to compromise on actions that could diminish the party’s appeal to voters.

On his vision as national chairman, he explained that his work would focus on grassroots mobilisation, leaving administrative tasks at headquarters to the General Secretary. “My work is with the people to ensure we bring in every vote for the party going into 2028,” he said, pledging to help make Dr Mahamudu Bawumia the next president.

In his welcome address, the Western Regional Chairman of the NPP, Nana Francis Ndede Siah, described Wontumi as a true grassroots leader deserving full support.
