The Minority in Parliament has taken aim at the government, accusing it of deliberately stalling the reintroduction of the controversial Human Sexual Rights and Family Values Bill, which seeks to outlaw LGBTQ+ activities in Ghana.

According to the Minority, the current administration—despite previously championing the bill while in opposition—has failed to bring it back before the 9th Parliament, a move they claim leaves room for increasing public expression of LGBTQ+ lifestyles.

During a parliamentary session on Wednesday, June 25, Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin condemned the inaction, labeling the delay as both disappointing and calculated.

He argued that the now-ruling party leveraged the bill as a major political tool during its time in opposition, promising Ghanaians it would be passed in defense of traditional family values.

“But now that they have the authority and numbers to act, they’ve gone completely silent,” he stated. “This is more than just disappointing—it’s intentional. You’ve brought in an urgent bill today, but where is the anti-LGBTQ bill you pledged to Ghanaians?”
