President John Dramani Mahama has revealed a new government initiative that will require all Senior High Schools across the country to operate their own poultry and livestock farms.
He explained that the policy is designed to boost self-sufficiency in schools by enabling them to produce their own meat rather than relying on external suppliers.
Speaking at the 65th anniversary celebration of Ghana Senior High School (Ghanasco) — where he and the First Lady both completed their secondary education — the President emphasized the school’s inclusion in the first batch of beneficiaries.
“We are introducing a policy that ensures every secondary school has a poultry and livestock farm, and Ghanasco will be among the first selected,” President Mahama said.
“We will set up these farms here so you won’t need to buy meat from the market. You’ll get it directly from your own produce. That way, the headmaster will have no excuse when students go to the dining hall and there’s no meat in their meals.”
He added that the initiative is part of a broader national effort to strengthen food production, equip students with hands-on agricultural skills, and ensure schools have consistent access to fresh meat for their feeding programmes.
