- Akua Afriyie insists she won the original vote and vows victory in rerun
With just hours to the highly anticipated parliamentary rerun in the Ablekuma North constituency, former member of Parliament for Assin Central Kennedy Agyapong has been spotted on the campaign trail, rallying support for NPP parliamentary candidate Nana Akua Owusu Afriyie.
In a widely circulated video, Kennedy Agyapong is seen casually playing a spirited game of spades—a traditional Ghanaian card game—with enthusiastic constituents. The scene reflects a relaxed yet strategic effort to engage with the grassroots and boost morale ahead of the contest.
Beyond the light-hearted moment, Kennedy Agyapong used the opportunity to voice his concerns over the New Patriotic Party (NPP) national leadership’s decision to withdraw from the rerun.
“Does the NPP National Executives’ decision not to contest mean they are handing the seat to the NDC?” he asked pointedly in an interview, questioning the wisdom of the party’s stance and signaling his support for Owusu Afriyie’s defiance.
Nana Akua Owusu Afriyie has vowed to go ahead with the rerun despite the party’s directive. She maintains that she won the initial election held on December 7, 2024, polling 34,613 votes against her opponent’s 34,199.
“We are fully prepared. Tomorrow, we are going into this contest,” she declared. “My polling agents and theirs collated the results from 278 polling stations, and I’m leading by 349 votes. Only three polling stations are left.”
With confidence and faith, she added: “Darkness can never cover light. I am the light; I am the truth. I walk with the gracious God. The Lord will speak tomorrow; justice will prevail. I’m contesting this election, and I will emerge victorious.”
As tensions rise and the stage is set for a dramatic political showdown, Kennedy Agyapong’s presence on the ground sends a strong message — the battle for Ablekuma North is far from over.
