A heavy military presence has been deployed to the premises of the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) in Accra following the arrest of New Patriotic Party (NPP) Ashanti Regional Chairman, Bernard Antwi-Boasiako, popularly known as “Chairman Wontumi.”

Wontumi was intercepted by EOCO officials shortly after he left the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) headquarters on Tuesday, May 27, where he had reported for further questioning as part of ongoing investigations into alleged illegal mining activities and unauthorized entry into forest reserves.

His unexpected arrest by EOCO operatives has sparked a strong reaction from NPP members and supporters, who have since flooded the EOCO premises in large numbers. The crowd, clad in party paraphernalia, is chanting patriotic songs and the NPP anthem in solidarity with their regional chairman.

Security has been tightened, with military personnel stationed at key points to maintain order and prevent any possible unrest.

So far, EOCO has not released an official statement explaining the specific reasons for Wontumi’s arrest, leaving many questions unanswered.
