Legendary Ghanaian actor William Addo, popularly known as ‘Akpatse’, has passed away at the age of 72. He died peacefully on 22 November 2025, following a prolonged struggle with serious health complications.
Mr. Addo was a towering figure in Ghana’s creative arts industry. Renowned as an actor, lecturer, director, and cultural advocate, he shaped generations of performers with his talent, mentorship, and vision. His memorable performances on GTV’s Thursday Theatre and other stage and television productions made him a beloved household name, admired for his wit, humour, and commanding presence.
A consummate professional, Addo studied Drama and Theatre Studies at the University of Ghana before earning a master’s degree in Acting and Directing from the University of Leeds, UK. His academic foundation enriched his performances and informed his work as a lecturer, inspiring countless actors and filmmakers.
Beyond acting, he held influential leadership roles, including Director at the National Theatre and Director of Programmes at the National Commission on Culture. At the University of Ghana’s Theatre Arts Department, he nurtured and guided many of the country’s most celebrated talents.
In later years, Addo battled major health challenges, including visual impairment due to glaucoma and cataracts. Yet, his contributions to Ghanaian theatre and film remained unwavering, earning him respect for his resilience and dedication to the arts.
William Addo leaves behind a lasting legacy that will continue to inspire and shape Ghanaian theatre, cinema, and cultural expression for generations to come.
