Story Highlights
  • Teacher coalition rejects the 6,100 recruitment plan as inadequate
  • Over 17,000 unemployed graduates demand fairness and transparency
  • Group threatens renewed protests without a clear employment roadmap

The Coalition of Unemployed Trained Teachers has criticised Education Minister Haruna Iddrisu’s announcement of a 6,100-teacher recruitment plan, calling it inadequate and disappointing.

In a statement issued on Thursday, November 20, the group—representing more than 17,000 trained but jobless teachers—said the minister’s update has only deepened the sense of anxiety and hopelessness among qualified graduates awaiting placement. They insist that every trained teacher deserves an opportunity, not just a small fraction.

“We are here to express our deep frustration with the Minister’s announcement. This approach falls far below what we expected,” the coalition stated.

The group, which staged a peaceful protest on Wednesday, November 19, is demanding the mass recruitment of all 2023 College of Education graduates. They criticised the announcement for lacking clarity and called for a transparent selection process with clear guidelines.

“Will recruitment follow a defined protocol, or will many deserving graduates be unfairly pushed aside?” they asked.

Describing the situation as unprecedented in Ghana’s educational history, the coalition said thousands of trained teachers remain stranded without jobs. They urged the Minister to ensure fairness and transparency in the recruitment process, rejecting his claim that they are “striking teachers.”

They further warned that they will resume street protests within two weeks if the Ministry fails to provide a clear employment roadmap.
