  • Suspected weed smokers have taken over the area, reportedly snatching phones and posing threats to users

Filth and darkness have taken over the main underpasses, walkways and bus stops at the Sofoline Interchange in the Kwadaso Municipal Assembly of the Ashanti Region, where many passengers and travellers board vehicles to their various destinations.

A recent tour of the area by Lawson News reporter, Anthony Amissah, revealed that the environment has been left to deteriorate significantly.

The underpass, which was constructed to provide a safe walkway for pedestrians, has been left unattended and neglected. Reports indicate that suspected weed smokers have taken over the area, posing an additional danger to users of the facility.

Characterised by filth, total darkness and cobwebs covering CCTV cameras installed in the underpass, the facility has now become a dangerous zone for pedestrians.

“There is complete darkness at night, with no lights in the underpass and no functioning CCTV cameras,” a passenger said.

At night, passengers and pedestrians are unable to use their mobile phones, as the suspected weed smokers who hide in the bushy surroundings frequently snatch phones under the cover of darkness.

Some pedestrians and residents living near the area, who spoke to Anthony Amissah, also expressed concern about the overgrown median at the Sofoline Interchange. Others said the underpass, which was built to protect their lives, is now exposing them to danger instead.

A teacher from Prempeh College explained how the situation is posing challenges to both teachers and students, noting that he sometimes has to bring his students to clean the area.

Residents are calling on the Municipal Chief Executive of the Kwadaso Municipal Assembly, Hon. Eric Assibey, to address the situation urgently to safeguard public safety.
