- The former minister links these internal problems to the NPP’s electoral defeat and cautions that reselecting the same flagbearer could lead to another “trainwreck”
Renowned heart surgeon and former Minister for Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation, Prof Kwabena Frimpong-Boateng, has launched a blistering critique of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), declaring that the party in its current form has lost its identity and core values.
Speaking in an interview on Monday, January 12, Prof Frimpong-Boateng insisted that the present-day NPP no longer represents the party he once served.
“The present NPP is not NPP. It is fake. From what I see now, this is not the NPP I used to know,” he stated.
Asked whether he still considers himself a member of the governing party, the former minister distanced himself from its current structure, saying his loyalty lies with what he described as the “real” NPP.
“Not the fake one. The real one is there. It is a virtual thing. The members are in the background,” he added.
Prof Frimpong-Boateng raised serious concerns about the party’s internal democratic processes, particularly the election of its most recent flagbearer. He alleged that the process was compromised by manipulation, bribery and intimidation of delegates.
“Look at how they elected their last flagbearer—twisting people’s arms, bribing delegates and intimidating others. This is the beginning of corruption. This should not be allowed in any serious institution or political party,” he warned.
He linked these internal shortcomings to the NPP’s poor showing in the last general elections, arguing that the party has failed to confront the root causes of its defeat.
“We lost the elections badly and we have not dealt with the issues that led to the loss. If they go ahead and elect the old flagbearer again, it will be a trainwreck,” he cautioned.
Clarifying whether his comments were aimed at former Vice President and NPP flagbearer, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, Prof Frimpong-Boateng was careful to separate personal qualities from leadership demands.
“No, no, no. Bawumia is a very nice person, but being nice alone is not enough to lead Nkrumah’s Ghana,” he said.
