At least 30 people lost their lives after a violent terrorist attack on Kasuwan Daji market in Demo village, Borgu Local Government Area, Niger State, police confirmed on Sunday.

The assault took place on Saturday afternoon, turning the busy market into a scene of chaos and terror.

According to police, the attackers looted shops, stole food supplies, and set the market ablaze, sending thick smoke over the community. An unspecified number of residents were also abducted, raising fears among villagers who already face security threats.

Police spokesperson Wasiu Abiodun said the attackers are suspected bandits operating from forested areas near the national park.

A joint security team confirmed the death toll of over 30 during a visit to the site on Sunday, and search operations are ongoing to locate and rescue those abducted.

Niger State has seen a spike in terrorist attacks, particularly in remote communities with limited security presence. Armed groups often exploit the dense forests, striking suddenly before retreating beyond the reach of local authorities.

This attack follows previous incidents, including the November abduction of over 300 pupils from a Catholic school in Agwara, highlighting the fragile security situation in rural Niger State.
