- Four soldiers and two security operatives detained for illegal enstoolment attempt
- Group tried to install a new chief despite an existing ruler
- Police, military, and Asafo groups face off amid community unrest
Tension has gripped Awutu Kwashie Abbey in the Awutu Senya West District of the Central Region after police arrested four soldiers and two national security operatives for allegedly attempting to install a rival chief in the area.
The Bawjiase District Police Command acted swiftly following intelligence that a group was preparing to enstool another chief, even though Nai Kwashie Abbey VII remains the officially recognised traditional ruler.
The officers were arrested at the scene, sparking chaos as supporters of the incumbent chief stormed the police station, demanding their release and threatening retaliation if the suspects were freed.
The already tense atmosphere escalated further when a military vehicle (registration number 52 GA 62) arrived with reinforcements reportedly seeking the release of their colleagues.
Members of the Asafo group loyal to Nai Kwashie Abbey VII have condemned the attempted installation and accused some state security operatives of meddling in chieftaincy affairs.
Their leader, Asafo Supi Nipa-Nka, warned that such interference could ignite violent clashes and urged both the military and national security to stay clear of traditional disputes.
