President John Dramani Mahama has directed the Minister for the Interior, Muntaka Mubarak, to give priority consideration to sportsmen and women during future recruitment exercises into Ghana’s security services.

Speaking during an engagement with the Ghana Football Association and the Black Queens in recognition of their bronze-medal achievement at the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) in Morocco, President Mahama said such a move would support talent development and provide athletes with the resources needed to grow.

“I have asked the Minister of Interior to give priority to sports people when we do recruitment into the security services,” the President stated.

He noted that similar initiatives in the past had enabled athletes to gain access to facilities and structured training, which enhanced their performance.

President Mahama also proposed the revival of the Security Services Sports Association (SESSA) Games, which previously offered a platform for security agencies to compete in various sporting disciplines and helped discover future stars for national teams.

“We must reintroduce the SESSA Games and let the security services compete amongst themselves. Then Kurt [Okraku, GFA President] and others can watch and pick the talents to form the national teams,” he added.

The Black Queens’ recent WAFCON bronze is their first medal in the tournament since 2016.
