Chirano, Western North Region – February 18, 2026 – A 34-year-old man, Obed Asamoah, has tragically died following the collapse of a galamsey pit in Chirano, located in the Bibiani-Anhwiaso-Bekwai Municipality of the Western North Region.

Reports indicate that Asamoah had gone to the mining site to work alongside fellow miners when the pit suddenly caved in.

In an interview, his brother, Nana Akwasi Danso, confirmed the incident, revealing that he had spoken to Obed earlier in the morning before receiving a distressing call informing him of the collapse.

The victim was immediately rushed to Bibiani Government Hospital, but he was pronounced dead on arrival. His remains have since been deposited at the hospital morgue.

Authorities have launched an investigation to determine the exact cause of the pit collapse, amid growing concerns over safety practices in artisanal mining operations in the region.
