The Greater Accra Regional Health Directorate has confirmed the arrest of a suspect linked to the alleged assault of a midwife at Tema Community 22 Polyclinic, following the circulation of a video of the incident on social media.
According to the Directorate, the incident occurred on Tuesday, June 2, when a relative of a patient reportedly attacked the health worker during the enforcement of the facility’s visiting-hour regulations.

In a statement issued on Friday, June 5, the Directorate described the attack as unprovoked, noting that the midwife was carrying out her official duties at the time of the incident.
The health authority strongly condemned the assault and reiterated its commitment to supporting the affected staff member and healthcare workers across the region. It stressed that no health professional should face abuse while performing their duties.
The Directorate also commended the Ghana Police Service for its swift response in restoring calm at the facility and apprehending the suspect. The accused is expected to appear before court on Monday, June 8.
Authorities urged members of the public to channel complaints and concerns through designated Client Service Desks at health facilities rather than resorting to confrontation. They further warned that acts of violence against healthcare workers would not be tolerated.
Meanwhile, the Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association (GRNMA) has condemned the incident, describing it as a criminal and unacceptable act of violence against a healthcare professional dedicated to providing care and support to patients and their families.
