A Calgary man, Duran Ross Buffalo, 40, has been found guilty of aggravated sexual assault and break-and-enter after a disturbing attack on a 90-year-old woman in her assisted living apartment on January 1, 2021.
The jury, after only an hour of deliberation, delivered guilty verdicts late Friday afternoon. The case was brought to light after a harrowing 911 call from the victim, whose voice revealed the trauma she had endured.
Initially, the victim’s claims were dismissed by authorities, attributing her distress to dementia and a possible bladder infection. However, key evidence, including Buffalo’s shirt found at the scene, led to a rape kit examination and ultimately confirmed the assault.
The victim tragically passed away last year, with a publication ban protecting her identity.
Buffalo represented himself during the trial. Sentencing arguments will be heard by Justice Michele Hollins at a later date, pending a pre-sentencing report.
