Tanker Drivers Hit Streets With Sit-Down Strike Over Bad Valco-Kpone Road

Petroleum tanker drivers have begun a sit-down strike over the worsening condition of the 7.2-kilometre Valco Roundabout–Kpone Junction road in Tema.
The drivers say the severely deteriorated road has become a major safety concern, particularly because they use the route to transport highly inflammable petroleum products.
Speaking in an interview, National Chairman of the Petroleum Tanker Drivers Union, George Nyawunu, said the drivers were compelled to take action after the road became increasingly dangerous.
He noted that although a contractor is currently working on the road, the pace of rehabilitation has been frustratingly slow.
According to the union, the poor road conditions are disrupting their operations while also heightening the risks involved in transporting petroleum products through the Tema enclave.
The concerns are particularly serious because the area hosts several petroleum storage depots containing millions of litres of fuel and LPG.
Nyawunu warned that the concentration of volatile petroleum products in the area makes the deteriorating infrastructure a serious public safety threat.
He stressed the need for urgent action to prevent a potential disaster that could affect residents in Tema and surrounding communities.
