Daasebre Osei Bonsu II Remembered: One-Week Rites Draw Massive Crowd

On Monday, May 12, throngs of mourners converged at Asante Mampong to mark the one-week passing of the late Paramount Chief, Daasebre Osei Bonsu II, known as Bretuo Piesie.

The solemn occasion drew prominent figures including former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, leading members of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), the Paramount Chief of Kumawu, Barima Sarfo Tweneboah Koduah, former Assin Central MP Kennedy Agyapong, along with a host of traditional authorities and community members.

The Asante Mampong Traditional Council and the Bretuo royal family formally announced the chief’s death to the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, on April 28 in keeping with traditional protocol.

Following this, the Asantehene tasked the Mamponghemaa, Nana Agyakoma Difie II, with commencing burial preparations, directing that the one-week observance be held on May 12 without delay.

Daasebre Osei Bonsu II passed away a few weeks prior after a brief illness. Before assuming the Mampong stool, he had served as the Registrar of Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) and was also a practicing lawyer.
