Police in the Central Region have taken a young man into custody after the mutilated remains of a woman, suspected to be his girlfriend, were uncovered in Bentum, within the Awutu Senya District.

The suspect, Horlali Alatusa, who is in his early twenties, was apprehended following a series of events that began with a disturbing discovery on local farmland.

The Investigation and Discovery

The case unfolded when a local farmer reported a foul odor emanating from his land. This sparked immediate concern among residents, leading to a community-led search:

  • Initial Search: On Tuesday, March 10, residents escorted Alatusa to the farm and dug a trench he was suspected of creating. While they found nothing initially, the discovery of bloodstains nearby prompted them to involve the police.

  • The Confession: Under police interrogation, Alatusa allegedly confessed to the crime and led investigators to a separate location where the body was hidden.

  • The Scene: Officers found the remains of an unidentified woman. Tragically, the body had been mutilated, fueling local theories regarding the motive.

Community Reaction and Suspected Motive

Alatusa is known within the Bentum community as a spiritualist who reportedly inherited his father’s traditional deities. Due to the nature of the injuries found on the deceased, many residents suspect the killing was a ritual murder.

Witnesses noted that the victim was last seen alive in Alatusa’s company on Sunday. In the wake of the discovery, an angry mob vandalized and demolished the suspect’s home.
