The streets of Dakar erupted in celebration on Tuesday as Senegal’s national football team received a hero’s welcome following their dramatic Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) victory over Morocco.

The Teranga Lions paraded slowly through the city in an open-top bus, greeted by thousands of jubilant fans waving Senegalese flags, blowing vuvuzelas, honking car horns, and chanting in excitement. Players took turns atop a double-decker bus hoisting the trophy and the national flag, while fans climbed onto car roofs and billboards for a better view.

“We had to be here with them. I came to thank them for this title, which puts Senegal at the forefront of world football,” said Pape Lo, who traveled 200 kilometers from the religious city of Touba.

Another fan, Marcel Ndecky, described the win as historic:

“This is our second title, but winning in Morocco is special. The team fought with dignity to win the continental trophy. They deserve the nation’s recognition.”

Senegal claimed their second Africa Cup title, following their first victory in 2022 against Egypt via a penalty shootout. Pape Gueye scored the decisive goal in extra time during Sunday’s tense final in Rabat, a match that saw the Senegalese players briefly walk off the pitch in protest of a penalty decision. FIFA and CAF criticized the walk-off, but it did not overshadow the nation’s celebrations.

For many, the parade represented more than sport. Businessman Ameth Mbaye noted:

“This enthusiasm shows the country’s patriotism. It also highlights the need to invest more in sports and reflects the determination of Senegal’s youth.”

The players arrived at Dakar International Airport early Tuesday, where they were welcomed by President Bassirou Diomaye Faye, who praised their performance:

“They did it heroically, they played beautiful football, they were incredibly fair and exemplary both on and off the field. We can only be proud of them.”

The parade culminated at the presidential palace, where President Faye announced generous rewards for the team, including 75 million CFA francs ($114,000) per player and a 1,500-square-meter plot of land in a seaside town. The ceremony drew numerous public figures, including Grammy-winning singer Youssou Ndour.

Despite controversy surrounding the final, the celebrations in Dakar highlighted Senegalese pride, patriotism, and love for football, as the Teranga Lions enjoyed a triumphant return home.
