Senegalese President Bassirou Diomaye Faye has rewarded the nation’s AFCON-winning football team with a €115,000 cash bonus and a 1,500-square-meter plot of land for each player, following their historic victory in the Africa Cup of Nations.
The announcement was made during the official celebration ceremony at the presidential palace in Dakar on Tuesday, after the Teranga Lions returned home from Morocco, where they defeated the host nation in a tense final.
Pape Gueye scored the decisive goal in extra time, securing Senegal’s second AFCON title in the nation’s history.

Fans poured into the streets of Dakar earlier in the day to welcome the champions, waving Senegalese flags, chanting, and blowing vuvuzelas as the team paraded through the city in an open-top bus. Players took turns hoisting the trophy and the national flag, sharing the moment with the ecstatic crowd.
“They did it heroically, they played beautiful football, they were incredibly fair and exemplary both on and off the field. We can only be proud of them,” President Faye said, praising the team’s dedication and sportsmanship.
The celebration was attended by several prominent public figures, including Grammy-winning singer Youssou Ndour, who joined the festivities to honor the team.
For many Senegalese, the victory and the generous presidential reward symbolize not only sporting achievement but also national pride and unity, highlighting the importance of football in bringing the country together.
“This is our moment. It shows the talent and determination of our youth, and it inspires the next generation to dream big,” said fan Ameth Mbaye, a businessman attending the parade.
The Teranga Lions’ triumph marks a historic return to the continental spotlight, following their first Africa Cup of Nations win in 2022, and the presidential rewards underscore the government’s commitment to recognizing and supporting sporting excellence.
