Liverpool midfielder Dominik Szoboszlai has revealed he remained in regular contact with Mohamed Salah during the forward’s time at the Africa Cup of Nations but declined to comment on the Egyptian star’s uncertain future at Anfield.
Salah’s inclusion in Liverpool’s squad for Wednesday’s UEFA Champions League clash against Marseille is expected to be confirmed on Tuesday. Questions continue to surround the 33-year-old’s future following a candid interview in which he admitted his relationship with manager Arne Slot had deteriorated.
However, Szoboszlai was unwilling to offer insight into the situation, insisting the matter is beyond his control.
“That’s between me and him. He will come back and then we keep going. It’s a decision between the manager and the club,” the 25-year-old said.
Asked about his communication with Salah since the forward left Merseyside on 15 December, Szoboszlai disclosed that the pair have stayed in close contact.
“To be honest, almost every day. We talk about everything. I’m following him and I guess he’s following me too. We speak a lot,” he added.
Slot recently stated he was “happy” to welcome Salah back, a sentiment underlined by Liverpool’s weekend draw against Burnley. Despite registering 32 shots, 11 on target, and an expected goals tally of 2.95, the Reds managed just one goal. Szoboszlai also missed a penalty in the encounter.
“That’s the first time we’ve played really well against a low block and created so many chances,” the Hungarian midfielder said. “We had numbers in the box, crosses and shots. That’s what we need to do again against Marseille, although they play differently and try to build from the back, so we must be ready.”
Szoboszlai also responded to criticism from Barnsley manager Conor Hourihane, who accused him of being “disrespectful” during last week’s FA Cup tie. Barnsley scored after Szoboszlai attempted a back-heel clearance inside his own penalty area, with Hourihane suggesting the midfielder would not have tried the move against stronger opposition.
