President John Dramani Mahama has announced plans to construct a 10,000-bed student hostel at the University of Ghana, a move intended to strengthen the nation’s tertiary education infrastructure.

Speaking on Tuesday, January 6, 2026, at the opening of the 77th Annual New Year School and Conference, the President described the initiative as a key solution to chronic student accommodation shortages and safety risks faced by off-campus residents.

The project will employ prefabricated building technology, with components manufactured off-site and assembled on campus. President Mahama revealed that the necessary machinery for the factory is already being shipped from Singapore to Accra, following a bilateral agreement reached during a recent official visit.

“This is going to be a prefabricated building. It will be manufactured elsewhere and then assembled on campus,” the President explained. He emphasized that this approach will allow faster construction and immediate relief for students facing unsafe off-campus housing conditions.

Referencing recent social media posts highlighting the struggles students endure today, the President noted that inadequate campus housing has become a life-threatening safety concern, with some students falling victim to accidents or armed robberies during their commute.

“It is preferable that we have as many of our students living on campus, or as close to campus as possible,” he added, confirming that the University’s Vice-Chancellor had already been briefed on the plan.

The hostel project forms part of Mahama’s “Reset Agenda” for 2026, which focuses on accelerating educational development and expanding infrastructure. In his New Year message, he also reaffirmed commitments to digitalizing schools and providing world-class education across the country.

On broader infrastructure, the President addressed the Accra–Kumasi Expressway, promising to commence construction this year to ease traffic between the two major cities as part of his “Big Push” initiative.

The 77th Annual New Year School and Conference continues under the theme “Building the Ghana We Want, Together for Sustainable Development,” bringing together policymakers and academics to shape the nation’s development agenda.
