  • Over 6,000 teachers say they have worked for 12–15 months but have been paid only two months’ salary
  • The Coalition of Unpaid Teachers is threatening renewed protests and possible legal action if government fails to act
  • Immediate payment of arrears and issuance of outstanding staff ID cards to regularise affected teachers

The Coalition of Unpaid Teachers has issued a strong warning to government, threatening renewed street protests and possible legal action over persistent delays in the payment of salary arrears and the non-issuance of staff identification cards.

According to the group, over 6,000 teachers who have been in active service for 12 to 15 months have received salaries for only two months, deepening their financial hardship despite a demonstration held last year.

Speaking in an interview with Citi News on Sunday, January 4, 2026, the Lead Convenor of the Coalition, Simon Kofi Nartey, appealed to government and the teachers’ employer to urgently resolve the issue.

He stressed that the continued delay is affecting the welfare and morale of teachers who are still expected to deliver quality education under difficult living conditions.

Mr. Nartey also demanded the immediate issuance of staff ID cards to members who are yet to receive them, warning that failure to complete the process before payment of this month’s salary could trigger another nationwide protest.

He further revealed that the coalition is considering legal action, describing the situation as discriminatory and unjust, especially as some teachers employed at the same time have already been fully paid.

The Coalition insists it will continue to explore all lawful means, including demonstrations and court action, until outstanding salary arrears are paid and the employment status of affected teachers is fully regularised.
