Over 90% of Road Contractors Idle Nationwide — Agbodza Blames Funding Gaps

Roads Minister says funding delays have left most contractors idle, casting doubt on previous government’s infrastructure claims.

Minister for Roads and Highways, Governs Kwame Agbodza, has revealed that more than 90% of road contractors across the country are inactive, despite being assigned sites and listed as working on projects.

Speaking in an interview on Thursday, July 31, 2025, the minister said that a nationwide inspection conducted shortly after assuming office exposed a major disconnect between reported infrastructure progress and the reality on the ground.

“Over 90% of contractors are technically on site but are doing no work,” Mr. Agbodza explained. He added that while some contractors had started work and submitted certificates for payment, the government’s delay in releasing funds had forced many to halt operations due to cash shortages.

The minister originally raised the issue during the Government Accountability Series on Wednesday, July 30, as he challenged the infrastructure claims of the previous administration, calling for greater transparency and accurate data in assessing national development.

Mr. Agbodza assured the public that the current government is taking steps to address funding delays and revive stalled road projects nationwide.
