Only 5,000 to Be Selected from Over 500,000 Applicants in Security Services Recruitment – Interior Minister
Government Cites Financial Constraints as Majority of Applicants Face Elimination

- Only 5,000 applicants will be recruited in the first phase
- Over 500,000 people applied for positions in the security services.
- About 400,000 applicants remain after documentation screening.
The Minister for the Interior, Mubarak Mohammed Muntaka, has disclosed that only 5,000 applicants will be recruited into Ghana’s security services during the first phase of the ongoing recruitment exercise due to financial constraints.
Speaking at a press conference in Parliament on Wednesday, the minister explained that the recruitment process for the Ghana Police Service, Ghana Prisons Service, Ghana Immigration Service, and the Ghana National Fire Service initially involved physical screening and document verification.
According to him, fewer than 30,000 applicants were disqualified during the documentation stage, leaving nearly 400,000 candidates to proceed to the next stages of the selection process, which include aptitude tests and medical examinations.
He noted that authorities have considered different options to streamline the selection process, including setting the pass mark for the aptitude test at 65 percent.
“The recruitment process involved mainly body selection and documentation. When we finished, those who were disqualified through documentation were less than 30,000, leaving about 400,000 applicants to proceed to aptitude tests and medical examinations,” he said.
Alhaji Muntaka explained that setting the pass mark at 65 percent could allow more candidates to progress to the medical stage, even though the final number to be recruited remains limited.
“The end game is that only 5,000 people can be absorbed,” he stated.
The Interior Minister acknowledged that the development could disappoint many young people seeking employment but urged them to remain patient, stressing that more recruitment opportunities would be announced in the future.
He added that government remains committed to creating employment opportunities not only within the security services but also in other sectors of the economy to address youth unemployment.
