A military officer serving with the National Anti-Illegal Mining Operations Secretariat (NAIMOS) has died following a vehicle accident, while four of his colleagues remain critically injured.

The injured officers were initially treated at Obuasi Government Hospital before being transferred to Anglogold Obuasi Hospital for further care.

The accident happened late Wednesday as the team was en route to Obuasi after conducting an operation at a mining concession in Anyankyerim, reportedly taken over by illegal miners. Eyewitnesses said the vehicle overturned between the Anyankyerim community and Airport Road.

The affected concession, owned by Mining and Construction Services Limited, has faced repeated illegal mining invasions.

Some of the intruding miners claim the site was allocated to them by the previous NDC government.

Reports suggest that certain influential political figures are backing these miners, including Alhaji Zamba, NDC Vice Chairman for Obuasi West Constituency, who has publicly asserted ownership of the concession in a social media video.
