In his first public interview since his election, Wisdom Osei Boamah, also known as Okumkom, the newly elected Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for Atwima Nwabiagya South, revealed the struggles he is facing as he starts his tenure.
Speaking on the Lawson TV/Radio Ghana’s Se Sen Morning Show on Monday May 19, 2025, Okumkom, who was nominated with a remarkable 100% endorsement from the Assembly members, shared that while he is excited to serve his community, the state of the municipal office has been far from ideal.
According to the MCE, his office is currently in a dilapidated state.
“The ceiling at my office leaks, the fridge shocks, and there are no chairs at the reception to receive visitors,” Okumkom lamented.
He explained that, despite the pressing need to begin work in earnest, the conditions at his office have made it difficult for him to perform basic administrative functions.
He also emphasized that the municipal office building has not been renovated in over six years, noting that it badly needs a fresh coat of paint.
These issues, he said, were particularly glaring when he recently took a delegation of chiefs and local leaders to the office. “I couldn’t even sit at my office,” he said, expressing his frustration.
He also shared that he has already raised these concerns with the Municipal Coordinating Director and expects that repairs and improvements will begin by the end of the week.
Despite these early challenges, Okumkom is determined to meet the expectations of the people who entrusted him with their vote.
“The 100% endorsement from the Assembly members means the task ahead is big, and I must deliver. I’m ready to make them proud,” he remarked.
One of the MCE’s key priorities is improving the area’s infrastructure. He expressed concerns about the state of the roads in Atwima Nwabiagya South, calling them “bad” and promising that fixing them will be one of his top priorities before the end of his first term in office.
Beyond infrastructure, Okumkom has ambitious plans for community involvement. He announced that he will set aside the first Saturday of every month as a day for communal labor in one town of the district, encouraging residents to come together and contribute to making the area one of the cleanest in the Ashanti Region.
He also made a direct plea to the residents of Atwima Nwabiagya South, urging them to support his efforts. “I can’t do it alone,” he said. “I need your help to bring change to this community.”
Okumkom reiterated his commitment to addressing the issues he highlighted during his campaign, particularly the infrastructural and developmental challenges.
He assured the public that he will continue to work closely with the leadership, including President John Mahama, who nominated him to ensure these issues are resolved.
