  • Government faces criticism over the pace and reach of its response.

The Ghana Health Service (GHS) has announced a renewed nationwide push for public education and awareness following a sharp rise in Mpox (formerly monkeypox) infections, with confirmed cases reaching 302 as of July 30, 2025.

This includes 20 new infections recorded just days after Ghana reported its first Mpox-related death on July 22, alongside 23 additional cases.

In an interview with Director of Public Health at the GHS, Dr. Franklin Asiedu-Bekoe, disclosed that sensitisation efforts will now be scaled up, especially across secondary and tertiary schools. He urged Ghanaians to stay alert, report symptoms early, and follow health protocols.

“We’ve developed guidelines with the Ghana Education Service and are rolling them out across all levels of education and the broader public,” Dr. Asiedu-Bekoe said.

The expanded campaign aims to inform citizens about the signs, symptoms, and prevention methods for Mpox.

However, despite these efforts, criticism is mounting over the government’s response. Dr. Kingsley Agyemang, a member of Parliament’s Health Committee, expressed frustration, describing the response as “abysmal.”

“Too many Ghanaians still don’t know what to do if they suspect Mpox,” he warned. “This is no time for half measures. We need urgent, widespread public education.”

As cases continue to rise, health experts and lawmakers alike are calling for swift action to avert a national health crisis.
