Minority Demands Better Service from ECG Before Supporting Tariff Increases

  • Despite a recent tariff increase, ECG’s commercial losses have led to a GHc67 billion debt
  • MPs call for faster access to electricity meters to boost customer satisfaction and revenue

The Minority Members of Parliament on the Energy Committee have firmly opposed any future electricity tariff hikes unless the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) makes significant improvements in its service delivery.

The caucus argues that despite a recent 14.75% increase in tariffs, the ECG has failed to resolve its ongoing commercial losses, which have contributed to a massive GHc67 billion debt to power producers.

The Minority attributes this financial mismanagement as a primary cause of the ECG’s continued underperformance. These concerns were raised in a meeting with key players in the energy sector, where George Kwame Aboagye, the Ranking Member of the Committee, stressed that no further tariff increases would be accepted unless clear performance improvements were demonstrated by the ECG.

“We have made it clear that we will not agree to any more tariff hikes unless there is a marked improvement in performance,” Aboagye stated.

The Vice Chairman of the Committee, Naser Toure Mahama, further emphasized the need for ECG to streamline the process of acquiring electricity meters. He highlighted that reducing delays in meter distribution would not only improve customer satisfaction but also boost the ECG’s revenue generation.

“If ECG can resolve the bottlenecks in meter acquisition, it will not only enhance revenue but also ensure that customers can start paying sooner,” Mahama explained.
