The Government of Ghana has announced a significant change in its approach to the protracted Bawku chieftaincy dispute, moving from peacekeeping to direct peace enforcement in response to escalating violence.
In a press release issued on Sunday, July 27, 2025, the Presidency revealed that the renewed violence in the area threatens to undermine earlier peacebuilding gains. As a result, the Ghana Armed Forces have been deployed to Bawku and nearby communities to enforce law and order, particularly the newly adjusted curfew.
“The Ghana Armed Forces will take all necessary measures to protect lives and property,” the statement assured. The operation, government emphasized, is aimed at safeguarding the wellbeing of residents, including students, and restoring calm.
The government also praised Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II for his tireless mediation efforts, along with the support of the Nayiri and Zugraana. Their combined efforts had brought the conflict close to resolution, officials said, before the recent spate of killings reignited tensions.
“Otumfuo’s mediation, with sincere support from the Nayiri and Zugraana, nearly resolved the impasse until the tragic turn of events in recent days,” the statement read. “The resurgence of violence demands decisive action in the broader interest of national peace.”
Citizens in affected areas are being urged to cooperate with the security forces, maintain calm, and avoid any acts of violence. The government acknowledged that the enforcement operation may cause inconvenience but stressed its necessity for lasting peace.
The statement, signed by Presidential Spokesperson and MP Felix Kwakye Ofosu, comes in the wake of the tragic shooting of Hakim Kundima, a final-year student at Bawku Senior High School. The Municipal Education Directorate has since shut down the school temporarily for safety.
Meanwhile, the Minister for the Interior, Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak, has revised the curfew hours for Bawku Municipality and its surrounding communities.
Effective Sunday, July 27, the new curfew will be in force from 2:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m. daily, as directed by the Upper East Regional Security Council (REGSEC) and issued under an Executive Instrument.
