A 30-year-old man has been sentenced to 25 years in prison with hard labour by the Bekwai Circuit Court for his involvement in a robbery at a mining site in Manso Akwasiso in the Ashanti South Region.

The convict, Dominic Ofori, popularly known as “Fanta,” was arrested on February 16, 2026, after evading capture for nearly four years.

Appearing before the Bekwai Circuit Court on Tuesday, Ofori pleaded guilty to robbery under Section 149 of the Criminal Offences Act, 1960 (Act 29). The court subsequently sentenced him to 25 years’ imprisonment with hard labour.

According to prosecutors, the incident occurred on March 20, 2022, when police in the Manso Adubia District received intelligence that a group of armed men from Manso Abodom were planning to attack a mining site at Manso Akwasiso and rob the site owner of gold concentrate.

Based on the tip-off, officers launched a coordinated operation and set up an ambush at the mining location.

At about 5:30 p.m. that day, four armed men arrived at the site, opened fire and carried out the robbery, making away with gold concentrate belonging to the miners. Police officers who had been monitoring the situation intervened, leading to a gun battle.

Three suspects — Abu Abubakar, Musah Latif and Gideon Takyi — sustained gunshot wounds during the exchange and were later pronounced dead on arrival at St. Martin’s Catholic Hospital.

Ofori, however, managed to escape from the scene and remained at large until his arrest in February this year.

The Ashanti South Regional Police Command has reaffirmed its commitment to tackling violent crime and ensuring that individuals involved in criminal activities are brought to justice.
