A woman arrested over the alleged theft of a four-day-old baby from the Mamprobi Polyclinic remains in custody and will soon be put before the court, the Accra Regional Police Command has confirmed.
In a statement issued on Thursday, 19 February, police identified the suspect as Latifa Salifu, who was apprehended on 18 February following what authorities described as intensive investigations into the reported abduction.
The case was first reported to the Mamprobi District Police Command on 17 February after a woman, allegedly posing as a nurse, entered the postnatal ward of the Mamprobi Polyclinic and took a newborn baby boy belonging to Precious Ankomah.
Acting on gathered intelligence, officers from the Dansoman Divisional Command tracked down the suspect at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital, where she was found with the infant. Police said preliminary checks showed she could not produce medical records to support claims that she had delivered the child. She was subsequently arrested to assist with investigations.
The baby has since been reunited with his mother, who identified him through a distinctive birthmark on his left leg. He has been referred to Korle Bu Teaching Hospital for further medical evaluation.
In response to the incident, police have increased security at the Mamprobi Polyclinic, deploying round-the-clock protection to safeguard patients, staff, and visitors. Authorities urged the public to remain vigilant in healthcare facilities and report any suspicious activity, while advising hospital management to strictly control access to maternity and postnatal wards.
